Donati: Obesity is a product of the current sports system

October 31st, 2007 by Janus Sejersen Laursen and Alexander Borch Nielsen · No Comments

Even though the current sport system produces lots of new world records it also leaves a lot of children behind in obesity. The highly respected Italian doping expert, Sandro Donati, is convinced that e.g. obesity among children occur because the children are forced out of the sports organisations due to the emphasis on performance.

- All the children without big talents are pushed out and they loose their motivation. So they do nothing at home. The sports institutions are interested in about one percent of the children so the 99 percent are left behind. The sports institutions are not interested in public health they are only specialised in performance, says Sandro Donati.

He believes that sport should be ‘the school of life’ but it is not today. According to Donati it is all about performance. Years ago he worked with children in sports and he is convinced that the problem lies with the adults.

- The adult must always remember that there is a child inside himself. It is easy for the coaches to forget that a person is both body and mind.
