EU decision is anticipated with both fear and hope

October 29th, 2007 by Peter Andersen · No Comments

Whether people are positive or negative towards the EU white paper on sports seems to depend a lot on where they are in the world. In Puerto Rico journalists are following the current debate in European Union about government intervention in sports.

If the EU decides to allow more intervention, major international sports organisations like the International Olympic Commitee and FIFA may change regulations worldwide to adapt to these rules. Journalist Alex Figueroa fears this will leave Puerto Rican sports organisations up for grabs for propaganda purposes.

- Sport can end up being a tool of government, Alex Figueroa says, mentioning that changing governments have already used sports for propaganda.

On the other hand Bob Munro of the Mathare Youth Sports Association in Kenya expressed a more positive view on more government intervention in sports, because of the Kenyan football clubs long struggle with the corruption in the Kenyan Football Federation.
