In cycling you take drugs

October 29th, 2007 by Dorthe Bregendal · 2 Comments

Jaksche speaking at the conferenceHe was 19 years old and had only been a professional rider for half a year, when he was introduced to doping. Jörg Jaksche was almost dropped from his team, but the fact, that he was riding on a natural basis gave the case another solution:

”The team manager came into my room and said: Listen; in cycling you take drugs like this, and either you accept or you leave the sport,” Jörg Jaksche quotes the words from back then.

The team manager showed him different kinds of doping, and Jörg Jaksche had to choose between shit and shit. Loose his job or accept to use doping. He chose EPO – like all the other riders. According to Jörg Jaksche EPO was back then used by everyone.

”At the beginning I was a little bit sad entering the game of doping. But in time I got used to it, especially because everything got all positive around me. I went fast, everyone liked me, because I was successful – it was all positive, so I didn’t have a bad conscience.”

When riding for the Once-team Jörg Jaksche didn’t know which kind of doping he got.

”I wanted to know, but they didn’t tell me – they said it was a corporation. You have to accept what they give you. I felt strange having to accept it, but at a time I didn’t care.

Weren’t you afraid?

“The only thing I was afraid of, was getting tested positive. That was the main fear, because I had good doctors, who were reasonable. I knew they had children, so I thought they wouldn’t give us something dangerous, at least I hoped.”

Jörg Jaksche is not angry at one exact person. Because as he says:

“In cycling everyone have to depend on a sponsor, who wants publicity. Everyone is under stress and the riders have to go fast. When we don’t go fast enough, the managers goes to the doctors, who go to the cyclists. If the doctors won’t do it, there will just come other doctors, who will.”

Alone on the stage

When Jörg Jaksche spoke in public about the huge amount of doping inside cycling, he got a lot of positive reactions from his former rider colleagues. They are glad that someone told the truth, but they only show their happiness to him.

“Most of the riders are suffering under the system. They quietly say, that what I did was good, but they only say it to me, because you don’t talk in public about what happens on the teams,” Jörg Jaksche tells.

Although the silence of other riders has left him pretty much alone on the stage, he doesn’t feel like they are letting him down. As he says:

“I have a big problem with the fact, that only the cyclists are criminalized. That will destroy the sport. So I just want to be honest and tell the truth. Of course I hope that more riders will do it, but most of all we are all egoistic, that try to get the best out of the situation for ourselves,” Jörg Jaksche says, well knowing that his egoism over time is hard to see.
