- Let’s play the game!

With these words Jens Sejer Andersen opened the conference Play the Game 2007 in Reykjavik.

Approximately 150 conference-participants were present at the first speech. Among them The WADA president Richard Pound and the president of the Republic of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.

Jens Sejer Andersen began his opening speech by listing how the world of sport has changed since the first Play The Game-conference ten years ago. The focus on doping has enlarged, while corruption and obesity are still growing problems.

The full name of the conference this year is Play The Game 2007 - creating coalitions for good governance in sport, because, as Jens Sejer Andersen explained, the world of sport needs to be better at working together with the government and other stakeholders.

I commend Play the Game and host nation Iceland for convening such an important event. Without doubt the two biggest issues confronting sport are governance (or lack of it) and doping (the widesread use of). Jens can be proud that he and the Play The Game team have done their bit in raising global awareness of these problems. Best wishes for a succesful conference.

Jens, I am sorry that work commitments prevented me from attending - I am following your discussions on the internet and they are fascinating. Same arguments, different excuses; but at least through Play the Game and others not prepared to accept sport the way it is - awareness is raised and people can be held to public account. Many congratulations to Play the Game and the team in Iceland. best wishes Michele
